Does well as an understory tree in partly shaded conditions, as well as in full sun. An exceptionally hardy strain. At a young age trees display beautiful, fragrant, white panicle blooms in spring. Dark blue fruit appears in late summer. One of the best (and most underplanted) all around shade trees for the landscape. Foliage is a bluish-green, and the bark is deeply furrowed and interesting in winter. Mahogany seed pods. Yellow fall color. Trees require moist situations to avoid early abscisence. If left untrimmed branches gracefully cascade to the ground. Great small accent tree with nice winter interest. Has done well in our zone 4 garden.
